How to Keep Kids Out of the Middle of Co-Parenting Conflict

By Sue Donnellan | Parenting Mentor & Educator, Award-Winning Author, Mom of 4

Co-parenting is one of those things people love to oversimplify.

“Just put the kids first.”

Of course, that’s exactly what you want to do.

But when emotions are high, trust is low, and two homes are trying to raise the same child with different routines, “Put the kids first” can feel impossible to pull off.

It may even feel dismissive of how difficult co-parenting actually is.

Your Child Doesn’t Need Two Identical Homes

Your child doesn’t need both homes to operate exactly the same way.

What they need from you is a home that feels predictable, emotionally safe, and calm enough to exhale in.

That begins with keeping them out of adult disagreements and focusing your energy on what you can control.

Focus on What Is Yours to Lead

You cannot control your ex’s choices, mood, or parenting style.

You can decide what happens on your own front porch.

That means learning how to communicate without creating another argument, grounding yourself before you respond, and resisting the urge to manage what happens in the other parent’s home.

How to Keep Your Child Out of the Middle

In this Ask Mom Parenting Podcast episode, we’re talking about how to keep your child out of the middle when co-parenting gets messy.

You’ll learn:

  • My three-sentence rule for communicating with your ex without opening the door to another argument

  • The quickest way to ground yourself when co-parenting goes sideways, including one question to ask before responding
  • How to stop trying to manage the other home and focus on what is actually yours to lead

You may not be able to make co-parenting easy, but you can change how you respond and what your child experiences in your home.
